Ken Griffin Said Crypto "Has No Value." Then Built Crypto Infrastructure.

Posted December 07, 2024

"Cryptocurrencies are a jihadist call against the U.S. dollar. They have no inherent value. I wish all these crypto-people the best of luck — I just think they're wrong."

— Ken Griffin, Citadel Founder & CEO

What Actually Happened

Ken Griffin, the billionaire founder of Citadel, has been a vocal crypto skeptic. He compared cryptocurrency adoption to a "jihadist call" against the dollar and repeatedly dismissed it as having no value.

The irony? Citadel Securities later became a major player in crypto markets. In 2022, Citadel partnered with Fidelity and Charles Schwab to launch EDX Markets, a crypto exchange. Griffin himself acknowledged that he was "wrong" about crypto's staying power.

Bitcoin has gone from around $47,000 when he made this statement to over $100,000, and the total crypto market cap has exceeded $3 trillion. Sometimes the best trade is admitting you were wrong — eventually.
