Hall of Shame

Buy Bear Stearns. Seriously.

Posted April 12, 2026

"Do not send in your money to Bear. Do not do it. Do not send in your money... Do not panic. Do not panic. Bear Stearns is not going down."

— Jim Cramer, CNBC Mad Money Host

What Actually Happened

On March 11, 2008, Cramer delivered what many consider the single worst stock call in financial television history. He urged viewers to hold their Bear Stearns positions and even suggested buying on dips. Five days later, Bear Stearns collapsed in a catastrophic fire sale to JPMorgan Chase at $2 per share (from $170 in January). Investors who followed his advice lost 98% of their money in less than a week. This call became the defining moment of Cramer's critics saying he was more entertainment than investment advice. The irony: he was trying to talk people OUT of panic selling, but his confidence was hilariously misplaced.
