What Actually Happened
Silicon Valley's most legendary venture capital firm, the one that spotted Apple, Google, and Airbnb early, published a fawning 13,000-word profile describing their Zoom call with FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried as "talking to the world's first trillionaire." They invested $213.5 million. Six weeks later, FTX imploded in one of the largest financial frauds in history. SBF is now serving 25 years in federal prison. Sequoia deleted the profile from their website so fast it left skid marks, but the internet never forgets. The world's first trillionaire turned out to be the world's most expensive game of League of Legends—which SBF was literally playing during investor calls. Due diligence has never looked so diligent.
